How to make Red Velvet Cake at Home

 

Red Velvet Cake

A southern classic made with cocoa powder, buttermilk and cream cheese frosting.

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar

Cream Cheese Frosting:

  • 8 oz cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

How to Prepared:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (180 degrees C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans,In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.In a separate large bowl, beat butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs, one at a time, then stir in vanilla.Gradually mix in the flour mixture, alternating with the buttermilk. Stir in the red food coloring and vinegar.

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and smooth the tops.Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove from the pans and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.To make the cream cheese frosting, beat cream cheese and butter together until creamy. Gradually mix in powdered sugar and vanilla extract until smooth.

Once the cakes have cooled, spread frosting between the layers and on top and sides of the cake.
